Debbie Newman was a successful Snell Isle real estate agent who dreamed of owning a horse since she was a little girl. In October of 2013, her dream came true when she went looking for a horse to buy and laid eyes on Shadow, a beautiful Dapple Gray. Instantly she knew, "That's him," she said.
She spent time with Shadow in his new surroundings grooming him, riding him, and learning the ins and outs of owning a horse. Debbie found the time she spent with Shadow a fabulous outlet providing her both enjoyment and relaxation. Her joy was short lived, however, when that December only two months after she and Shadow found each other Debbie was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer. Debbie had to give Shadow up.
Jamie Weil took Shadow to her farm and let Debbie know that Shadow would be well taken care of and always available when Debbie wanted to see Shadow. When Debbie finished her first round of Chemo she came to see Shadow. Debbie was weak and pale. Shadow just wrapped his head around her and in his special way let her know it would be okay.
Debbie and Jamie realized that the healing power gained from being with the horses was something they wanted to provide to others in need. The two of them sat under one of the big oak trees by the riding ring and came up with Shadow Serenity. The 501c3 became a reality and participants started taking advantage of the free program.
Debbie lost her battle with cancer and Jamie decided the program must continue in her memory. Not a day goes by that Jamie does not miss her dear friend and Shadow has a forever home. Once in a while Jamie will find a feather in the barn or hear a door shut when no one is around. Jamie knows it is Debbie telling her it is all okay.
